Functional over-the-counter swaps for more natural self-care

Antacids → try a digestive enzyme or adding in an acid like Betaine + HCL

Antacids are safe for use everyday but if you are using an antacid everyday there may be an underlying chronic problem that needs attention. If you are suffering from chronic acid reflux, it may be due to many factors one of which could be the relaxing of a sphincter muscle which allows that harsh hydrochloric acid in your stomach to burn the esophageal lining. A digestive enzyme supplement taken 15-30 minutes prior to a meal can naturally help your body break down hard to digest foods that could be causing the heartburn. Peppermint oil capsules and oregano oil or drops have also been used effectively for dyspepsia symptoms.

If you or someone you know has been on Proton Pump Inhibitors for a long time, there are functional ways to help alleviate symptoms and heal the gut as well as reduce the use of PPIs. Our PPI reduction protocol can be a great place to start for anyone experiencing chronic acid reflux.

Generic fiber caps made with calcium polycarbophil a bulk forming laxative → natural fiber capsules made with flaxseed, psyllium husk, rice, bran, apple pectin, fig, and prune

When it comes to fiber intake, the standard American Diet severely lacks high quality sources of fiber. By incorporating more natural sources of fiber, you are also incorporating more prebiotic foods that feed the good bacteria that live in our gut. Fiber is very important especially in individuals who struggle with their cholesterol or blood sugar issues by binding and eliminating excess bile and cholesterol and preventing the body from allowing it to re enter the bloodstream. If you find yourself struggling to incorporate more fiber in to your diet every day, a natural supplement can help bridge that gap. With any additional fiber intake it is important to also increase your fluid intake. Bulk laxatives work by drawing existing water from the intestines and swell to create a bulky soft stool, this could create an issue in individuals who do not consume adequate amounts of water daily. Polyethylene glycol/stimulant laxatives → aloe vera 450 concentrate for a natural laxative

Some artificial additives or laxative ingredients can cause cramping and discomfort in some individuals. Aloe is a natural, gentle, and effective alternative to traditional laxatives for those suffering from constipation, discomfort, or other negative side effects of stimulant laxative

Antihistamines → D-Hist

Some antihistamines contain ingredients that can have other side effects such as drowsiness or irritability like when it comes to pseudoephedrine. D-Hist is a natural supplement that is greatly effective at eliminating symptoms of allergies. Taken seasonally, or year round. Does not cause drowsiness or other negative side effects. Contains stinging nettle, quercetin, vitamin c, bromelain, and n-acetyl-l-cysteine.

NSAIDS → InjuRecov or curcumin

NSAIDS can have negative effects on the GI system and may even cause gastric ulcers to occur. It is best to seek out more natural and effective options for pain and inflammation management such as a curcumin or a blend of curcumin, ginger, MSM, collagen, DGL, and boswellia.

Meclizine or dramamine → ginger root

Ginger is a well known anti-nausea remedy, and is often paired with Vitamin B6, peppermint, and lemon balm.
